Sound that is potentially annoying, which travel outdoors reaching sensitive premises, is covered by the environmental noise field. The sources of noise are varied and the circumstances where noise is received can also be complex. Particularly frequent cases of environmental noise sources observed in the urban scenario include Mechanical Plant, Transport, Entertainment Noise, Domestic Noise and Construction Noise.
The quality of the built environment is highly influenced by the acoustical characteristics of the building materials and internal surfaces. Whether these are habitable or non-habitable rooms, open plan or focused work areas, waiting rooms and lounges, shops or display rooms, conference and function rooms; appropriate management of the sounds that are audible inside a building is the key to effective design for a suitable comfort profile.
Similar to building acoustics, the acoustical qualities of internal surfaces and shapes will provide certain comfort standard for purpose internal spaces. The physics of sound propagation in rooms is very complex; however, we are able to use computer modelling tools or calculation code to assist in treating spaces with a combination of absorption, diffusion and appropriate placement of sound sources (e.g. loud speakers).
